Muslim women’s experiences of racism and their work with art and activism (2018-2022)

This project has a threefold purpose. The project aims to broaden our knowledge about Muslim women’s experiences of anti-Muslim racism in Sweden. In what way are women’s everyday lives affected and how do they handle experiences of discrimination and exclusion? The second aim of the project focuses on Muslim women’s navigation and resistance strategies against stereotypical discourses on what it means to be Muslim in the current Swedish context. Here, I am interested in documenting and analyzing how young Muslim women have come to use art as a way to create, negotiate and express their subjectivity. The project has an ethnographic approach and is based on qualitative interviews, observations of exhibitions, and analysis of fiction, theater and poetry. The project also aims to, from a decolonial perspective, through workshops; explore the intersection between research methodology and artistic expressions in order to understand how stereotypical discourses of being Muslim in Sweden are manifested and being reformulated. The central question is in what ways research and artistic work overlap and benefit from each other in understanding the voices and experiences of marginalized groups.

This project is funded by the Swedish Research Council since 2020.

A Child Perspective on Children’s Rights in the Swedish Asylum Process (2020-2021)

This project examines the Swedish asylum process from a child perspective for asylum seeking families from Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria who came to Sweden during 2015-2017. The study is done through examination of families own stories, as well as analyzing the Swedish Migration Agency’s and the Migration courts’ assessment of their cases. The scientific leader for the project is Anna Lundberg, Professor of Welfare Law at Linköping University.

Evaluation project of Lås Upp– Begränsande normer (Unlock Restrictive norms) 2014-2015

This was an evaluation assignment commissioned by the Stockholm County Administrative Board of the Lås Upp– Begränsande normer project. The project was developed and implemented by the Women and girls’ shelter in Botkyrka. The aim of the project was to introduce tools and promote critical norm pedagogy with a focus on gender, sexuality, and violence to teachers in upper secondary schools in Stockholm. The evaluation of this project was based on qualitative interviews with teachers who participated in the project’s workshops. The results were presented in an evaluation report. The evaluation was carried out together with Sabine Gruber, Associate Professor in Social Work at Linköping University.

“That will be your home” Resettlement preparations for children and youth from the Horn of Africa. (2009-2014)

My dissertation project was about stereotypical discourses of Swedish exceptionalism and refugeeness within the Swedish Migration Board’s preparatory introductory efforts for quota refugees. The project was based on ethnographic fieldwork that was carried out in 2011 in refugee camps in Kenya and Sudan. The focus of the study was on communicative processes between Swedish governmental staff and refugee children and youth.

Project at the Bureau against Discrimination in Östergötland on discrimination and diversity work in healthcare (2009)

This was an educational project on equality, diversity work, and discrimination in the health and medical care sector in the County of Östergötland. The purpose was to design and carry out workshops and a conference aimed at employees in the health care.
