A couple of days ago, baba sent me this nazm called Bahar aayi (Spring is here). The nazm is written by the Marxist, Urdu poet and writer Faiz Ahmed Faiz (known for his revolutionary poetry and work on socialism). Its sung by Tina Sani, a famous ghazal singer in Pakistan. Growing up in the 1990s, it was mainly through her voice that Faiz’s poetry was spread and made popular.
Bahar aayi is, on the surface, about the coming of spring, new beginnings, and hope but it is also about ambivalence, and the more dificult emotions that emerge with every new spring.
